Dating agency fees included in inflation calculation

We were interested to read that the basket of goods used by the office of national statistics (ONS) to calculate the rate of inflation now includes dating agency fees for the first time.

The items chosen to make up the representative basket are changed to reflect what people actually buy. So for example in the latest calculation smart phone apps are in and pork shoulder is out.

So the fact that dating site fees are included means that this sector is now considered by the government’s statisticians as a part of everyday spending. From the official ONS press release: “Also reflecting new trends, the updated basket includes dating agency fees for the first time. This is because, with the spread of the Internet, online dating sites are becoming an increasingly common way for people to find a partner.”

Which is good news for us, and good news for our members.
